Walt Disney World has eliminated most of the loopholes that allowed guests who aren't staying on site to park at resort hotels or Downtown Disney and use Disney shuttles to get into the theme parks without paying for parking. However, one loophole remains - at least, it did last time I was at WDW.

For annual passholders, using the Downtown Disney lots can be a cost-effective option instead of paying the extra $79 for the 'free' parking option on their annual passes. Here are some guidelines to follow:

* If you're staying less than seven hours and 20 minutes, and plan to eat in one of the Downtown Disney restaurants, you can park in the lot and avoid paying for parking.

* If you're staying less than five hours and 20 minutes, or just need a quick bite to eat before heading into the parks, using the Downtown Disney lots is also a good option.

One important thing to note is that the parking rate at the Mickey and Friends garage at the Disneyland Resort is $14 per day. However, if you park in Downtown Disney, your first three hours are free. After that, the rate is $6 an hour, with an additional two hours of free parking available with validation from a movie theater or table service restaurant.

For those who have visited Walt Disney World but not the Disneyland Resort recently, be aware that the layout at the Anaheim park is similar to Universal Orlando - a parking garage, central shopping area, and two theme parks at the end of the shopping area. Downtown Disney is located within easy walking distance of both Disneyland and California Adventure.
